Nocturne Bolero Groove
by Tim Lake
Charlie Haden's 2002 "Nocturne" is an understated melancholy reflection on the Cuban ballad bolero song form. It's an album I often come back to for some quite listening.
Cuban born jazz drummer, Ignacio Berroa provides the percussion throughout and underpins most of the songs with this wonderfully simple, steady groove. Played with brushes, it is really just hand-to-hand quavers with a five stroke roll on to beat 2, but when played well it sounds phenomenal.
A nice groove to add to your repertoire. And of course, listen and play along!
